Winter project 2025 - Modular Origami Polyhedra

This year we're folding paper again! We'll be building wonderful polyhedra from different modules. The modules are easy to fold from triangular, quadrilateral, or pentagonal paper and then put together.

Get involved!

Grab some paper, fold and decorate your modules, and come to the HEGL Christmas party on December 15 from 3 - 5 pm at the foyer in the basement, where we'll assemble everything (and eat cookies, play games and have a nice time together).

Join us!

This year, we want to build lots of different colorful polyhedra from individual modules. We need your help, because the more people who participate, the more and bigger polyhedra we can create.

  • There are three types of modules: squares, triangles, and pentagons. For each module, you'll need one colored and one white piece of paper of the same shape and size (square: 6 cm side length, triangle and pentagon: 6.6 cm side length).
  • Take one colored and one white piece of paper of the same shape. You can find paper, for example, at HEGL and at the workstations outside the seminar rooms.
  • Fold the papers according to the instructions below. Solid red lines mark mountain folds, and dashed black lines mark valley folds.
  • Place the rider (colored paper) on the horse (white paper).
  • Fold the protruding corners of the colored paper inwards (the ones of the white paper remain; these are the connecting pieces).

  • If you like, decorate your modules. You can write something mathematical on them (e.g., your favorite math statement), something wintery/Christmas-themed, or simply decorate them nicely. This can be anonymous, but you're also welcome to include your name.
  • Return your modules to the HEGL or drop them in the box outside. Or—even better—bring them directly to the HEGL Christmas party on Monday, December 15th, at 3 p.m.!

Blank papers are available in front of the HEGL Lab, at the workstations on each floor, at the information pillar on the ground floor, or on the bulletin board on the third floor (next to room 3.301). If they are empty, please let Anna Schilling or Florent Schaffhauser know.

HEGL Christmas Party - Join us!

On Monday, December 15th, 2025 the HEGL Christmas party will take place in HEGL and in the foyer UG from 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come by!

At the Christmas party, we'll assemble all the modules into wonderful origami polyhedra. You can also:

  • eat cookies,
  • play games (Dobble, SET, etc.),
  • experiment with Penrose and Einstein tiles,
  • chat and have fun.
