The activity of illustrating a mathematical concept often favors reflections in new directions and accidental discoveries. I will illustrate this on two examples: in the first I tried to design a jigsaw puzzle with a rotation invariance; in the second I wanted to illustrate the Penrose tiling substitution rule.
